Booking for Events

To book tickets for Dorset Opera events (not the Festival performances), please book online by clicking the Eventbrite link given beneath each diary listing, or go to Eventbrite and search ‘Dorset Opera’ – a list of events will then emerge.

Tickets for the Celebrity Lunch are not available through Eventbrite. An alternative payment method is available for this event and instructions are given beside the listing. Tickets will incur a small booking fee and a suggested voluntary donation on which we are able to claim Gift Aid.

Bluffers’ Lunches

All Bluffers’ Lunches are hosted by Dorset Opera Patrons, Susannah and Bruce Selby Bennett at picturesque Slepe Green Barn, Slepe, Poole BH16 6HS (on the A35). Arrive at 11:45 for welcome coffee, then off to the Barn for a 75-minute lecture followed by a delicious 2-course lunch accompanied by a glass of wine. After lunch, return to the Barn for more coffee and a question and answer session. Lunches normally finish around 15:00. Tickets from £24 per person include a suggested voluntary donation of £10 plus a small booking fee. Gift Aid will be claimed on your donation. Do let us know if you have special dietary requirements – and please purchase your ticket beforehand using the Eventbrite links.

The first Bluffers’ talk for 2017 is entitled My Life with Music and is presented by Dorset Opera Patron, Nigel Beale. Formerly Chairman and now honorary President of the Beales Stores empire, which was founded by his great-grandfather in 1881, Nigel is an unashamed opera aficionado and travels the world to satiate his appetite. For 22 years, he was Chairman of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and for some time served as a member of the Dorset Opera board.

Dorset Opera’s President Emeritus, Lady Digby, along with Lord Digby and the Trustees of the Friends of Dorset Opera, invite our Patrons to a recital at Minterne House, Minterne Magna, Dorchester DT2 7AU. Gus Christie – Executive Chairman of Glyndebourne Festival Opera – is our 2017 Celebrity Lunch guest speaker. Founded in 1934 by his grandfather John, for his wife (the singer Audrey Mildmay), Gus is the third Christie to take charge of the world’s greatest opera festival held at his family home nestled in the Sussex Downs. Dorset Opera’s Artistic Director is given the Kirsty Young treatment by Dr Richard Hall as a fundraiser for the Dorset Rural Music School. Please note: this is not a Dorset Opera event, but it will no doubt be great fun and you might care to support it. Established in Blandford in 1947, DRMS stimulates musical activity countywide via individual lessons, group work, day courses, music appreciation classes and the promotion of concerts in rural locations with a music retail service, instrument hire and library of scores and CDs. Malcolm Arnold – His Operas and Other Things. Arnold was a prolific larger-than-life composer whose music output covered all genres. Having said that, he is possibly best known to the public for his many film scores such as Bridge On The River Kwai; Whistle Down the Wind and The Inn of the Sixth Happiness. When he died in 2006, the BBC described him as ‘a towering figure in the history of British music’. Having worked with Arnold for more than 20 years, our guest speaker, Alan Poulton, will illustrate his talk with audio-visual excerpts. 17 June 2017 | Ritzy Tea Party
This year’s Ritzy Tea Party is held at the kind invitation of Dorset Opera Patron, Mrs Jennifer Coombs, at her stunning Grade I-listed home near Blandford Forum – which is not open to the public. Parts of the house date from 1634 and the 110 hectare ‘park and pleasure grounds’ surrounding it – which were developed in the second half of the 18th century – include a delightful ornamental lake. There will be mountains of mouth-watering food including sandwiches, scones, clotted cream and preserves, cakes and gateaux, with a strawberries & cream and a fantastic fizz finale! As usual, there will be raffles and auctions – all aimed at having fun with good friends and to raise a few funds to assist with providing bursaries for some of this year’s young Dorset Opera Festival participants. Our Patrons get the opportunity to join us at Bryanston to see how your 2017 operas are progressing. Arrive in the Coade Theatre foyer for morning coffee and pastries at 11:00. You will meet members of both the Dorset Opera Board and our production and technical teams. Follow this with visits to the wardrobe, props department, the chorus rehearsal room and possibly to the theatre to see part of the morning’s stage rehearsal. Lunch is at 13:00 at which you’ll be joined by some of our artistes and musicians. At 14:30, return to the theatre to see part of the afternoon’s stage & orchestra rehearsal. 17 August 2017 | Wareham by Boat: Fun and Firework Fiesta
Skippered by Cap’n Mike Hodd, our boat sets sail from Greenslades orange kiosk on Poole Quay at 18:45. Once aboard, we partake of traditional sea-fayre (fish & chips to you, me hearties!) and there be on-board liquor to purchase! After a perilous journey up the narrows to Wareham (where another tot of rum might be forthcoming if we raid the local hostelry) we keep a north eye on the tide afore gliding stealthily round the scenic parts of Poole Harbour in time to drop anchor offshore from where we can watch the summer fireworks at 22:00. After that we’ll keelhaul a couple of crew members but landlubbers should be back ashore by 22:30.
