Booking for Events

To book tickets for Dorset Opera events (not Festival performances), please book online by clicking the link given beneath each diary listing, or go to Eventbrite.co.uk and search ‘Dorset Opera’ to bring up a list of events.

Tickets include a suggested voluntary donation on which we are able to claim Gift Aid.

Bluffers’ Lunches

Dorset-Opera-Lunch

Bluffers’ Lunches are hosted by Dorset Opera Patrons, Susannah and Bruce Selby Bennett at picturesque Slepe Green Barn, Slepe, Poole BH16 6HS (on the A35). Arrive at 11:45 for welcome coffee, then off to the Barn for a 75-minute lecture followed by a delicious 2-course lunch accompanied by a glass of wine. After lunch, return to the Barn for more coffee and a question and answer session. Lunches normally finish around 15:00. Tickets from £26 per person include a voluntary donation of £15. Gift Aid will be claimed on your donation. Do let us know if you have special dietary requirements – and please purchase your ticket beforehand using the Eventbrite links.

The joint AGMs of both organisations will be held at Duke’s Auctioneers, Cooper Street, Dorchester DT1 1GA. With drinks and canapés. Time: 18:30 for 19:00.

31 January 2019 | Bluffers’ Lunch No.40: The Tenor Voice
Nigel Beale takes the helm at the first Bluffers’ Lunch of 2019. This lecture will be the first of a series where opera aficionado Nigel explores each of the operatic voice types – with relevant illustrations both aural and oral. As most of you know, Nigel is president of the stores’ group that bears his name, and for 22 years, he was also chairman of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. 04 April 2019 | Covent Garden Comes to Dorset
After last year’s triumphant visit of members of the Royal Opera’s elite Jette Parker Young Artists’ Programme, we are proud to welcome five new JYPA alumni this year. In a rare appearance outside the Royal Opera House itself, our guest singers and their accompanist – from various parts of the world – are joining us for another very special Dorset event. This year’s concert will be held in Wimborne Minster, Wimborne BH21 1EB. Time: 19:30 – 21:45. 09 May 2019 | Bluffers’ Lunch No.43: Rutland Boughton – Where the most successful English opera ever meets free love on the Somerset levels! 
Yes, that’s the intriguing title of Dr Richard Hall’s talk on the infamous British composer of The Immortal Hour and other such masterpieces. 16 May 2019 | Dinner with the Phillimores
Lord & Lady Phillimore kindly host an exclusive dinner party with musical entertainment in their Dorset home in support of the Dorset Opera Festival. The entertainment will take place in a marquee. We are sorry, but this function has to be limited to just 80 and is for some Patrons only. Tickets by invitation only: £95 per person. Black tie.

07 June 2019| Volunteers’ Summer Party
This year’s Volunteers’ Party is – once again – held at the kind invitation of Dorset Opera Patrons, Susannah and Bruce Selby Bennett at Slepe Green Barn , Slepe, Poole BH16 6HS (on the A35). This is a special non-to-be-missed thank you for our wonderful volunteers without whom the Dorset Opera Festival simply wouldn’t happen! By invitation only. 22 June 2019| The Ritzy Tea Party

This year’s Ritzy Tea Party is held at the kind invitation of Dorset Opera supporters, Mr & Mrs Michael Fulford-Dobson at their glorious home in Cerne Abbas. There will be mountains of mouth-watering food including sandwiches, scones, clotted cream and preserves, cakes and gateaux, with strawberries & cream and a fantastic fizz finale! As usual, there will be raffles and auctions – all aimed at having fun with good friends and to raise a few extra funds to assist with providing bursaries for some of this year’s young Dorset Opera Festival participants. Venue: The exact address in Cerne Abbas will be sent to you in due course and, will be printed on your tickets. Time: 15:30-18:30. Making his annual pilgrimage to Dorset, star dramaturg, Simon Rees, takes us on his traditional humour-and-fact-fuelled romp through the backgrounds to this season’s Festival operas, Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor and Verdi’s Nabucco. 19 July 2019 | Patrons’ Lunch Our Patrons get the opportunity to join us at Bryanston to see how your 2019 operas are progressing. Arrive at Bryanston’s New Music School foyer for morning coffee and pastries at 11:00. You will meet members of both the Dorset Opera board and our production and technical teams. Follow this with visits to the wardrobe, props department, the chorus rehearsal room and possibly to the theatre to see part of the morning’s stage rehearsal. Lunch is at 13:00 at which you’ll be joined by some of our artists, choristers and musicians. At 14:30, return to the concert hall where the orchestra will be tuning up, then back to the theatre to watch part of the afternoon’s stage rehearsal. 22 August 2019 | Floating Fireworks Fiesta
Ready yer sea legs and leave the landlubbers behind! Come and enjoy a summer evening return cruise to Wareham or Swanage (depending on weather and tides) with opera-loving friends, old and new. Once aboard, we enjoy traditional fish as chips as Cap’n Mike Hodd deftly skippers us on our way. Keeping a north eye on the tide he will return us to take in the the scenic parts of Poole Harbour before dropping anchor offshore from where we will watch the summer fireworks at 22:00. Our merry mariners will be back ashore by 22:30. There is no musical entertainment at this event. The route is weather-dependent so may be subject to last minute change. Alcoholic & non-alcoholic drinks, teas and coffee may be purchased from the on-board bar. Leave the Quay at 18:45 – back ashore by 22:30. Join us in Slepe Green barn to watch David McVicar’s 2012 production of Verdi’s Rigoletto on the big screen. Featuring Vittorio Grigolo, Dimitri Platanias and Ekaterina Siurina, conducted by John Elliot Gardiner. Venue: Slepe Green Barn, Slepe, Poole BH16 6HS (on the A35). Time: 18:00 doors open for a sharp 18:30 start. The film lasts 2h 10 mins but we will enjoy a light supper with a glass of wine in the interval which will last about an hour so we will finish just before 10pm.
