Booking for Events

To book tickets for Dorset Opera events (not Festival performances), please book online by clicking the link given beneath each diary listing, or go to Eventbrite.co.uk and search ‘Dorset Opera’ to bring up a list of events.

Tickets include a suggested voluntary donation on which we are able to claim Gift Aid.

Bluffers’ Lunches

Dorset-Opera-Lunch

Bluffers’ Lunches are hosted by Dorset Opera Patrons, Susannah and Bruce Selby Bennett at picturesque Slepe Green Barn, Slepe, Poole BH16 6HS (on the A35). Arrive at 11:45 for welcome coffee, then off to the Barn for a 75-minute lecture followed by a delicious 2-course lunch accompanied by a glass of wine. After lunch, return to the Barn for more coffee and a question and answer session. Lunches normally finish around 15:00. Tickets from £26 per person include a voluntary donation of £15. Gift Aid will be claimed on your donation. Do let us know if you have special dietary requirements – and please purchase your ticket beforehand using the Eventbrite links.

27 January 2020| AGMs of Dorset Opera and the Friends of Dorset Opera
The joint AGMs of both organisations will be held at Duke’s Auctioneers, Copper Street, Dorchester DT1 1GA. With drinks and canapés. Time: 18:30 for 19:00.

20 February 2020 | Bluffers’ Lunch No.49
Speaker: Dr Richard Hall – Ethel Smyth: Composer, suffragette, jail bird and Dame of the British Empire
Following his fascinating insight into Rutland Boughton, Dr Richard Hall returns to engage us in the work and history of another British composer, one of the very few women to take up and succeed in the metier. Amongst other things, Dame Ethel was known for her opera The Wreckers which has found some popularity in recent years.  Dr Hall heads up the Dorset Rural Music School charity in Blandford Forum, which has been the focus of music in the county for 70 years. We’re in celebration mode!  This will be our 50th Bluffers’ Lunch and who better to help whoop it up than Adrian Thorpe? For his first Bluffer’s lecture of 2020 Dorset Opera’s star raconteur has chosen Opera and Humour as his subject. Don’t leave booking too late. The second of a series in which opera aficionado, Nigel Beale, explores each of the operatic voice types – with relevant illustrations both aural and oral. As most of you know, Nigel’s music credentials are tip top. He was chairman of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra for 22 years. 05 June 2020| Volunteers’ Summer Party
This year’s Volunteers’ Party is – once again – held at the kind invitation of Dorset Opera Patrons, Susannah and Bruce Selby Bennett at Slepe Green Barn , Slepe, Poole BH16 6HS (on the A35). This is a special non-to-be-missed thank you for our wonderful volunteers without whom the Dorset Opera Festival simply wouldn’t happen! By invitation only. 13 June 2020| The Mad Hatter’s Ritzy Tea Party
This year’s re-named Ritzy Tea Party is held at the kind invitation of milliner to the glitterati, Cozmo Jenks, at her home near Woolland on the side of Bulbarrow. In a Dorset Opera first, Cozmo has offered to open her studio so that ladies can try on and purchase some of her fabulous creations. There will be a fizz welcome, mountains of mouth-watering food including sandwiches, scones, clotted cream and preserves, cakes and gateaux, with strawberries & cream finale! As usual, there will be raffles and auctions – all aimed at having fun with good friends and raising a few extra funds to assist with providing bursaries for some of this year’s young Dorset Opera Festival participants. Venue: The house is near the village of Woolland, 7 miles west of Blandford. The exact address will be printed on your tickets. Time: 15:30-18:30. 25 June 2020 | Bluffers’ Lunch No.53: All you need to know about this season’s operas

Making his annual pilgrimage to Dorset, star dramaturg Simon Rees takes us on his traditional humour-and-fact-fuelled romp through the backgrounds to this season’s Festival operas, Puccini’s La rondine and Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov. 02 July 2020 | An evening with Lord and Lady Fellowes
Lord and Lady Fellowes invite us to their splendid home near Dorchester for a champagne reception with canapés and operatic entertainment. This event is open to all but limited in numbers. The evening will feature a Three Tenors concert in a marquee. Please contact smh@dorsetopera.com if you would like to receive an official invitation (which will include the venue and parking details) and please inform us of any special dietary requirements. Sorry, last-minute decision-makers cannot be accommodated. Tickets £55 per person to include a voluntary donation on which Gift Aid will be claimed. Responding to the invitation will give you access to the Eventbrite booking code.

17 July 2020 | Patrons’ Lunch
Our Patrons get the opportunity to join us at Bryanston to see how your 2020 operas are progressing. Arrive at Bryanston’s New Music School foyer for morning coffee and pastries at 11:00. You will meet members of both the Dorset Opera board and our production and technical teams. Follow this with visits to the wardrobe and props departments, the chorus rehearsal room and possibly to the theatre to see part of the morning’s stage rehearsal. Lunch is at 13:00 at which you’ll be joined by some of our artists, choristers and musicians. At 14:30, return to the concert hall where the orchestra will be tuning up, then back to the theatre to watch part of the afternoon’s stage rehearsal. 27 August 2020 | Floating Fireworks Fiesta 
All aboard the Brownsea Island Ferry! Come and enjoy a summer evening return cruise with opera-loving friends, old and new. Once aboard, we enjoy traditional fish as chips as we make our way upstream to Wareham. Keeping a north eye on the tide we will return to anchor offshore in Poole Harbour to watch the summer fireworks at 22:00. Our merry mariners will be back ashore by 22:30. There is no musical entertainment at this event. The route is weather-dependent so may be subject to last minute change. 2 September 2020 | Celebrity Lunch with John Fisher of the New York Metropolitan Opera
John Fisher has had a glittering career. He has been head of music at La Scala, Milan (under Claudio Abbado); artistic director of La Fenice, Venice; head of A&R at Deutsche Grammophon; head of music administration at the Metropolitan Opera, New York; artistic director of Welsh National Opera and in a second term at The Met, he was Assistant General Manager. Naturally he speaks fluent Italian, German, French and also Dutch! He is an expert répétiteur and continuo player and has conducted several prestigious recordings. There is no one on the international opera circuit that he doesn’t know or hasn’t worked with. Venue is still to be announced.
